The Butterfly: A Symbol of Hope and Healing

The transformation of a caterpillar into a butterfly is a powerful reflection of the healing journey after sexual assault — and when that butterfly is teal, the meaning deepens even more.

A caterpillar begins its life grounded — moving slowly, exposed, and vulnerable. In many ways, that mirrors how trauma can make a survivor feel: shaken, unsafe, disconnected from their body, their identity, and the world around them. Sexual assault can disrupt a person’s sense of trust, safety, control, and self.

Then comes the chrysalis stage.

Inside the cocoon, the caterpillar doesn’t simply grow wings — it completely breaks down before becoming something new. Its old form dissolves so transformation can occur.

Healing can feel very similar. Survivors often move through periods of intense internal work: grief, anger, confusion, numbness, silence. From the outside, it may look like nothing is happening. But inside, something profound is taking place.

Healing is not instant. It is not linear. It requires safety, support, and time — just like the protected space of the chrysalis.

When the butterfly finally emerges, it does not erase what it once was. It carries its entire journey within it. Survivors, too, do not forget what happened. Healing does not mean pretending the trauma never occurred. It means reclaiming voice, power, identity, and choice. It means deciding: What happens next is mine.

There is another powerful truth about the butterfly: the struggle to break free from the cocoon is necessary. That resistance strengthens its wings so it can fly. Without that struggle, it would not survive. In the same way, the courage it takes to speak out, to seek help, to set boundaries, to attend counseling, to walk into court, or simply to get out of bed builds strength and resilience. What feels like struggle is often the very thing building flight.

Now, add teal.

Teal is widely recognized as the color of awareness and prevention, especially during Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Teal represents healing, trust, and calm — qualities that trauma deeply impacts and that advocacy works to restore. It also represents visibility. It says:

We see you. We believe you. We stand with you.

When combined, the teal butterfly becomes more than a logo. It becomes a declaration.

🦋 Transformation – Survivors are not defined by what was done to them. They are constantly becoming.

💙 Awareness & Advocacy – Teal honors survivor voices and the ongoing work to end sexual violence.

🌿 Resilience – Strength is built through surviving, rebuilding, and reclaiming power.

Hope & Renewal – Even after deep harm, new beginnings are possible.

The teal butterfly tells a deeper story. It acknowledges vulnerability without leaving someone there. It honors the invisible work of healing. It recognizes struggle as strength. It holds both pain and possibility at the same time.

A teal butterfly says:

You survived.

You are transforming.

You are stronger than what happened to you.

You are not alone.

And most importantly — you still have wings.
